Your ideas for the search function sound good, too. Although I sometimes deliberately search for not the precise colour because I want to see the items of multiple colours (e.g. I search for "sand" because I want to see light sand and sand brown). I admit that it's annoying for colors like green that you can't search precisely though. You could just rename the colors to pure green or something like that ;)

I was thinking about something like that as well. I think the most common way is to search for "Green" if you only want precise fits? Or maybe one could have a checkbox next to the search for it, so that people will actually notice that the possibility is there.

I only ever used the sort by color option to cover the gaps search by color had. So as someone who rarely uses it I don't have anything to say about updating it or leaving it. :'D

The other improvements you mention all sound great! Hopefully they won't be a struggle to implement.

Thinking about it some more, the best option I see would be if you decided to make a dropdown for the colors: Make it a list with multiple selection.
That way we would actually gain so much flexibility, because we could look at any choice of colors we want at the same time, even some we can't now because they have disjoint names. I would love that! It would make designing around a color scheme so much easier, because you could look at everything you want to consider at the same time, instead of switching between looking at the different colors.
And if you make the selection anyway, it shouldn't be that much harder to make it with select multiple. It's probably a different gui element and a slightly more complex query, but it should be manageable, I believe.
