It's a cute staff.
I already own the Light Staff 2 (older digging item) which has the same colors, so I guess that's why I don't find the Sol Staff so interesting.

Hm, with just taking the colors into account, I agree. But the Light Staff 2 is sharp and jerky while the Sol staff is round and flowy (and is also what I personally prefer, I can't recall the last time I used my light staff 2 XD)

So true, the shape is different.

I usually focus more on colors than shapes, because sometimes that's what fills in a hole in my wardrobe.
When I'm making an avatar in certain colors I may want something in them for the different elements of the composition (robe, face, hand, background, etc.) and if I have several things I can choose from then I get picky.
If not I may use what I have or simply head to the stores (bananarama being my fave one) and buy something.
But for me shape is somewhat secondary.

I always find staffs kind of tricky, mostly because I tend to make my avi's fairly symmetrical and a larger object like a staff on one side tends to not really work for me.

I like this MT a lot! I actually had a single FC saved up for quite a while, waiting for when there was a MT I really wanted. I was tempted by last months MT (Benzaiten) as well, but I'm glad I waited for this one. The background and border are especially nice, I'm a sucker for any kind of bg with gradient light/clouds. And I really like the dress, wings and tattoo as well!
