In my life, I've heard people say you should respect everyone and I've heard people say people need to earn respect.

I honestly try to respect people in general.
Unless they give me a reason not to.
I try to be considerate and understanding and just overall not be a douchebag.

But I also kinda agree with people needing to earn my respect, but only after having done something to me for me to lose respect.

Do you respect other people or do you want people to earn your respect?
Do you like blue or pink cotton candy more?

Strangers are on a neutral respect level. I don't know them, I likely won't ever see them again, interact and move on
A dickheel, such as a person running around saying that because they're older than me I'm required to give them respect, gets disrespected. Hey, you're disrespecting me, why should I respect you?

So I guess for me it's an earned thing
And I think some people are mixing respect with being nice. Two different things

So true. We should treat others as we would want to be treated, but respect is earned. I don't respect very many people. Most people simply don't deserve it.

I'll take any cotton candy. XD But I think I like blue more. I have had pink that tasted like strawberry and when it tastes like that I like them equally.

Depending on who you're talking to....they want you to respect them and ten they'll 'respect' you by treating you like a human being. Double standard type stuff.

You should treat everyone like a person and then they need to earn the respect.

Which my plant manager lost mine altogether with the way he treats people.

Well, as there are multiple definitions of respect...

Respect:
v. admire (someone or something) deeply, as a result of their abilities, qualities, or achievements
v. have due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of

... you can treat someone with respect (2nd definition) regardless of whether you respect (1st definition) them.

pretty much agree. all people are deserving of respect until they give you a reason (and it has to be a VALID reason) not to. some people think that disrespect is warranted for nonsensical, or childish, or bigoted reasons. not everyone agrees on what is respectful, to be sure. but doing your best to respect someone is common decency.

I usually respect someone unless they feel like they're entitled to it, then I don't respect them, and they will have to earn it.

I try to be respectful to everyone, but I work at a convince store, so that's a part of the job. Sadly just because I'm doing my best to be respectful, they think they have the right to walk all over me.
