The funny thing is that if you look at the cost of the USED books, (as opposed to buying new) the hardcovers are often CHEAPER than the mass market versions.

Which drives me nuts because I like the MMPB versions best, and I can't really afford to get books new at all so it's frustrating. I love our library book sale, and one of the used book stores in town has a 25-cent shelf (remember I live in the US right now; not sure what that would be the equivalent of for everyone else here, but that's REALLY CHEAP), but otherwise buying books is a process I agonize over, because funds are always hard to find :qsweat:

Yes.... and I really really really love our library.

I remember one of the tighter-budget months, I asked the library to hold one of the books they were selling for me, it was only 50 cents but I just didn't have it then, and the person behind me in line paid for it for me. I'm tearing up again just thinking about it. That was so incredibly kind, at a time I really needed it. And the librarian who was there for it saw how I just broke down and started up a donation box for people who needed the help, to be able to use those funds to get books or pay fines so they could check out books again. The whole thing just really impressed me with the library and the people who use it and run it.

I love hardcover books, but they are so expensive. I only limit those to books I really want to read, or series I really love. I have to go back and buy some books in hardcover for that. Recently though, I have been introduced to a bookstore that opened up in my area that sells pre-owned books. I have only been in there twice, only because each time I bought 5-6 books (some for me and some for my nephew since he got the age of learning to read so I want to get him into reading). I should really invest in a library card, but I get such a rush owning my own copy.

I prefer softcovers. I can even read them in such a way that when I'm done they still look completely brand new.
My friends are scared to borrow anything. :}

Wow, I've never managed that! I get too excited by the story and forget to be careful of the book....

Yeah, I am bad about that too... with softcovers I tend to fold down pages and bend them a bit to hold them easier ... LoL ...

I tend to prefer paperback books purely because 99% of the time when I'm reading I'm lying in bed, and hardcovers are a lot heavier to hold in that position. I do think that for display purposes hardcovers look better on a shelf though. That being said, I do quite like when a book looks read, so when I read books I like to bend the spines and dog ear the pages (which I know some people are cringing at the thought) so by the time my paperbacks always look well loved :qhehe:

I think I like softcovers more. Hardcovers can be heavy. And now, from an editor's perspective, I also prefer softcover.
