New POLL

Curious to know how times have changed, if at all.

Do you ever visit your Local Library to check-out books?

If Yes, do you Check-out books to read for Enjoyment, School or College?

:mchappy: At this point in my life, I read for Enjoyment and often drop by my local library to check out books. If they don't have the book, I often purchase the book in hard cover if available.

Follow up question might be how many people are actually in school or college...

I'm not any longer so the only reason I go is research for work (which wasn't a choice?) or enjoyment. When I *was* in school and college, then I went for enjoyment or school or college, but not work research.

i admittedly have not been to the library in an awfully long time.

(...aaand i might still owe them a fine. :mcheh: :mcheh: :mcheh: )

the latest trend here are little free libraries! :mchappy: people make little structures to house books - often in the parking strip, or near the front of their property - and anyone passing by can take one to read or leave one for someone else. community centers and places of worship often have them, too. :qh:

I've seen those!

It also makes me curious about how many people use non-local libraries.

Online libraries or university libraries or books from other libraries that get sent to your local one with inter-library loans or if you visit libraries when you visit other places...

I go to local library ever week or two, but it's mostly for research from books that can't be borrowed. Of course I offten take one book home, but now I am in SF club and they have free library so I borrow books from there.

I don't use school library anymore.

i do use project gutenberg and some of the other archives of common domain books (wiki has one iirc?), come to think. :mccute: often looking for old horror or sci-fi! i first read the king in yellow online... well. the collection of stories, not the alleged madness-causing play. :mcwink:

I've not read The King in Yellow. Is it a good read?

it is! it has sort of a transitional feel between victorian horror (the king in yellow was written in the late victorian era, published in 1895) and the work of lovecraft in the 1920s. quiet, but deeply unsettling.

Right! *adds to "To-Read" list*
Thanks, it'll be interesting to see how a transition between those two ended up getting described as 'quiet'! I find the Victorian horror to be fairly overblown, and Lovecraft goes a bit overboard too, so this will be fascinating!
