I started reading Pamela. It's a very old book. I don't know the story at all, so I don't know what's going to happen. But I'm thinking it didn't age very well and is going to end stupidly. Here's how it starts:

Pamela's boss: Want to have sex?

Pamela: No

Boss: Then I'll rape you.

Pamela screams, runs, faints. Housekeeper runs in.

Boss: You b-----. Now everyone will think I'm a creep. You're fired. Get out of here.

Pamela: Oh thank goodness, I want to go back to my parents.

Boss: Good, get out. Except you have to stay here and keep working for like a month for some reason.

Boss then spends the month hiding in closets to peep on her and lunging at her.

Housekeeper: OMG, how romantic, he's so into you.

Me: .............

Well, with such a start, a stupid ending doesn't sound too unrealistic :mcargh:
Let's just hope she won't magically fall in love with the creepy boss :mcheh:

Wow that sounds awful. I don't know how people were and still are attracted to that kind of romance themes in books.

I apparently have this bad habit this year where I will go read a short manga instead of my book. Even if I'm into it. Don't know why. I just keep doing it. Like I went to go read the other night and I grab my tablet instead and start reading a manga instead.

I heard that due to covid/lockdown people tend to go for shorter entertainment. Maybe that's it?

It could really be that. All I know next year is instead of forcing myself to finish series (not really forcing myself though?) I'll just read whatever I want. I just wanted to finish up some series I've had on my shelf for years to read. Lol

I've given up on organized reading goals, lol, just doing the books I want at this point. Life is too short to spend my time forcing myself to do things I don't want to, when there's no good reason for it.

"It" starts off like the movie basically, if you've seen it. The beginning was a bit confusing due to mixed time lines, but I like it by now as I got used to it.

mem, I am glad you found some time to read :)

Sanssouci, this book sounds creepy. Especially the housekeeper...?

Akili, if you really have to force yourself, then you probably shouldn't, indeed :D For me, it's not really forcing myself, but reminding me to read instead of watching a series or movie. In the end I am also happier this way :)

Ha ha, yeah.... I have high hopes that my life will become less stressful in about... let's see, today is the 20th? Okay, so a fortnight from now, things will back off a little bit, and another month at the outside and most of the worst of it should be over. So after that, I can look again at things like finishing books that are harder instead of just always reaching for the easy, but right now? Right now it's all about emotional bolstering and not pushing things even further, because breaking points come too close to play with when everyone is under stress already...

I totally agree! For now it is totally okay to look at light literature, whenever the time comes, you can still read more of the heavy stuff :)

I always want to read big thick books (at least 500-600 pages), so I will always under estimate how long a book less that 500 pages will take me. I went to the bookstore for the first time since last year. It was a magical experience. I bought way too many books to sit and collect dust because I have a book addiction.
