I've seen this occur a lot online.
Sometimes it's people just trolling, but there are some people who really want people to think they drew something.
I have seen a lot of them on DeviantArt.
And to my surprise, they get reported, but still exist a year or so later.
It's so stupid.

I don't know if anyone has stolen my work.
I don't see why they would.
But I did have someone draw art of my OC, and I used it as my profile picture.
When I clicked on my account, I saw that a friend of a friend had the same image as their profile picture.
I panicked, and I told my friend, and we both messaged them to take it down because it was my OC, and art made for me only.
They apologized and changed it.
I don't mind things like that, but to knowingly take something you know you have no right to have...it pisses me off.

I actually drew a picture and posted it online, and someone said something like "Nice art. Who is it?" and I said "Just some random character." and they asked me if I even drew it.
I was like ">____> uh, yes."

Have you witnessed any art theft?

Sorry you had to deal with that, Moi.
Art thieves have been getting increasingly evasive - going as far as to trace entire pieces. Even if they're not monetarily profiting from it, the views and attention are being leeched off your own hard work.

DeviantART is particularly bad though, I think. Their rules don't seem to be as strictly enforced. (As opposed to Wysp, Pixiv, etc.)

Yeah.
There's some artists I love, and they've had their art stolen, and put on t-shirts and stuff.
Which would make me so sad if I had bought one, without knowing they never consented to it.
One especially, I LOVE her art, and I'd kill to buy shirts with her art on it.

I've been thinking about leaving DA. I see so much stupid stuff these days.
I have a Tumblr and a Pixiv account, but the problem is, I really like some of my watchers.
I have a lot of fun talking to them, and I don't think they have any accounts on there.
And I don't want to demand they get them.
I had a friend I lost when Tinier Me shut down, and I'm still sad xD

Also, your art is so pretty.
I love seeing new art from you :3

I have seen it... far too many times.

People pour their heart and soul... blood, sweat, and tears into their artwork. It truly contains a piece of *them* - and for someone to misrepresent that is just horrendous.

I've seen it happen a few times. Usually people putting other people's art on tshirts and selling them. That's not cool.

oh man, art theft makes me so mad >:U

like, how hard is it to just. not steal other people's art? it's literally so easy to just not be a huge dick.

i don't get mad at kids who trace other people's art, because they're literally children and they're still learning how to People, but when it's adults who do it, or just straight up repost other people's art claiming it's their own... that makes me so mad.

Art theft is rough for full-time artists. Even if the thief is thinking 'the artist will never find out, so they won't worry about it', it's potentially taking sales away from them (i.e buying the fake shirt because it came up first in google search). This is often the thinking in thefts perpetrated by younger 'fans', because some of the reasoning behind it is poorly thought out.

Furthermore, it will prevent clients interested in commissioning the style from finding the true artist, as you KNOW the thief doesn't link back to the social media...

There's a whole thing about people stealing Patreon art, the bits posted that are for patrons only, and posting them on free-to-access forums. There're a few websites out there, and they even make money from donations to keep the site running.
Why are people like this :mcargh:

The main problem with art theft is no one really A) understands the laws and B) understands the impact it has.

Art theft is an ongoing issue in the art community, sadly.

The reason you can find DA users years later who blatantly steal is because DA will not remove content or ban users unless the original artist files a DMCA against that person, or at the very least the original artist must make a complaint directly to DA, and even then they may not care. It's bullshit.

i've had to chase people down for using my friend's art that they drew of THEIR oc for their own oc? like a faceclaim, except not only was it stolen art, but the art was ALREADY someone's character... lord.

i've also had to chase someone down for using art that i COMMISSIONED for that same friend... so not only was it a) my money, but it was also b) my friend's oc?

i've also seen friends' oc art used as faceclaims on other places too and it's just. astounding, really.
