What comes to mind when you think of chivalry?
Is it men opening doors for women theyre interested in?
Do you think chivalry is dead?

I am reading a book about the knights and chivalry, and it is an ideal of loyalty, bravery, courtesy, generosity, and humility.
Why would those ideals be dead?

What is chivalry really?
What does it mean when a man opens a door for a lady?

I think chivalry is a sort of idealized code, or romantic code, where men show respect to women, not where they necessarily woo them.

Balmung [from Dot Hack] is a knight, and he protects women from monsters, but he says he doesnt understand women and seems to rarely date. He treats women well because it is part of his code.

Women could be knights too. It just didnt happen very often. How did a woman demonstrate chivalry? Was it towards men? or towards women?

On one side chivarly is being respectful etc. but to me it's not all good.
Chivarly is very one sided (men to women), and I kind of associate it with the image of women as weak and fragile. And that last thing is seriously outdated.

I think it's just common courtesy for people to hold doors and do things like that, but let's get rid of the gender thing and what it's associated with.
I feel a bit uncomfortable if men do things for me because I'm a woman and not just because it's a normal thing to do.

I feel more like a lady when men do certain things for me. The other day, this teen boy tried to grab something for my mom and I because we couldn't reach and my face just turned red because it was so kind for him to do that.
I also had a guy give up his seat for me and I still think that was so sweet of him to do and it made me feel good at the time.

But at the same time - I don't need men to do something for me if I can do it myself.
I think it's polite to open doors for people and everyone should do that.
If you see an elderly person or a pregnant woman standing, you should give them your seat because it's just polite.

A world of fragile things
Look for me in the white forest
Hiding in a hollow tree (come find me)
I know you hear me,
I can taste it in your tears."
