The security part is the one I understand the most out of all of my airport problems.
I find it overkill but the thing I hate even more than the security itself is people that don't put their racks aways. It holds up the line for everyone else more than the actual security check does.

And the immigration is even worse. I don't understand the need to file for a visa exemption with every information they need beforehand to still get held up there.

Only had two days though so I've only seen Manhattan.
It wasn't as crazy as I thought. Or maybe that's because I'm used to Tokyo.

What I did find crazy were the airports. It's the only country I've ever been to that doesn't make you go through immigration when you get out of it, the only country that has such crazy security check, the only country that make everyone go through the same security lanes regardless of whether they fly domestic or internationally, the only one where anyone can get in freely to the baggage claim area, the only one that doesn't allow for baggage and immigration free transfers and I could go on.
The airports are maddening.
I like airports, but the most chaotic ones for me are in Paris (Charles de Gaulle) and JFK in New York. The rest are not nearly as crazy! I hate immigration too, it's always intimidating, but nothing really happens. I've never had to file a visa exemption yet.

@light_sucks: Yeah I think a lot of urban areas in the US really fail at public transportation. I understand when the infrastructure cannot allow for a metro system, but they should really work on better bus services.. it's really poor shaming for people who do not have cars / cannot afford it, especially since car insurance in poorer / less urban areas is so much more expensive than in an affluent area.

I do like airports.
Just not the way they're run, especially in the US.

I did find JFK a bit confusing but I wasn't on transit so it made things easier and less confusing. As for Paris, I'm starting to get used to it and usually fly Air France in and out of it which really helps, but it's definitely not the best airport I've ever been to and it usually takes me more than one hour to get out of it (as a French person) which usually gets on my nerves after a 11 hours flight (thank god for the Air France arrival lounge ^^).
It takes me more or less the same to get out of LAX and more or less half an hour to get out of any Japanese airport. With my suitcases.

People always complain about transiting in JFK, which I have never experienced yet...and grateful that I haven't.
I agree. I landed home from China in JFK and it was my flight, and some 777 flights from Istanbul, another from China, and Milan...so all huge flights jam packed in one arrivals/immigration...at 1am ..

I just realized that "take out" means food, dating, and murder. And if you were a female praying mantis you'd have all three.
