Er. Not... really. I expect to be entertained, mostly. I try never to buy a book I've not read before, because I don't want to own it unless I know it will stand up to multiple re-readings, and what's the point in owning a book if I can't reread it a lot? So I don't actually mind spoilers, because to me, if the book can't be entertaining even after I know something of what is going to happen, it definitely will not be able to be reread.
Does that make any sense at all?

But I am constantly finding new things in books when I read them again. Or just looking at them differently makes me think about different things.

It's like when you're little and someone reads a book to you, it's all about the the plot and what happens. Then when you get a little bit older it might be about the characters. Then your reading skills mature a little and you start noticing the author's underlying cultural assumptions and the ethics/worldview they follow (like contrasting a thriller that is about catching a murderer vs a thriller that is about successfully killing someone who "can't be brought to justice by conventional means" -the plots might actually be very similar, the characters might almost be interchangeable, but the worldview behind them is very different).
I don't know, I'm not explaining this well.

But I notice different things each time I read a book, usually, and my only criteria is: am I enjoying the process of that discovery? First time or fortieth. (I don't think I've ever read a book forty times, though)

I actually love re-reading books. I know that doesn't make a ton of sense with the way I hate spoilers! But, for me, there is something different about knowing what's coming because I read it before versus knowing what's coming because someone else told me. And, with my bad memory, there is always something that I forgot, so there is always still something to surprise me!

So wulfalice nailed it in that you have different expectations of reading vs rereading?

Yeah, I'd say that's accurate for me.

one of the interlibrary loans for another Dr. Siri book came in! Now I just have to get down there and pick it up.

A small update: I read a book recently! It was only a small kids book about magicians and how they create their illusions, a bit of history etc.. but it was quite interesting and nice to read while I was sitting around waiting and unable to do anything else

Why have you been unable to do anything else, Ghost? But it is great that you got some reading done that way!

I guess if you are someone who feels obligated to finish every book you start, you would want more information before starting anything. But if you don't mind putting down a book you aren't enjoying, then it is simple to just begin reading without checking the back or inside-cover blurb.

- no I was not sarcastic at all when I asked it. I only read a book which is worth while because I am exactly that kind of person you describes: If I start a book I want to finish it, no matter what.

And as for getting spoiled by reading the back of the book: My memory is horrible, I'd forget what it says right away
