can you just google up the story with spoilers to save your precious time? no really, if the book is bad, why do you care about it ending on a cliffhanger? it's already bad. the cliffhanger just makes it worse.

I'm BARELY getting any reading done.
Oh, man! I HATE when I read a book, and I don't like it, but I figure I will at least finish it, and then it ends up being a cliffhanger! Glad you warned me. Now I'm less interested in reading it!

I kind of got invested in one of the characters towards the end ;_; I think maybe because they were the only one that acted like a real human but oh well. I think my natural optimism also hopes that just maybe the next one might have some redeeming qualities?
In the cold light of day I'm considering just Googling it. Although it was a very quick read, so it would go well for the reading challenge XD That's probably a good way to cheat myself on the challenge haha, since the point was to read good books.

Maybe. Then again it's also a study in how not to write a book. Examing her writing (and figuring out how the hell it's popular anyway) can help me to write better.
Actually, this is a good point for debate: how do you think something like this can get popular, even with so many obvious mistakes and flaws?

I am ten books into my challenge and I am stuck on a book I want to like but I am finding it dull. I am going to try to finish tonight so I can move on to something more interesting

people trust media and have low standards - 1
writing is subjective - 2
marketing is done the right way - 3
this is how, basically
@bombus: oh yes, wanting to like something when it's not likable enough is the worst. I had this with Wicked by Maguire. the first half was fantastic. the rest was as if written by someone else. I just wanted it to be over

Well, yes and no. When a book starts out with the right marketing on Amazon, it's true that it can make many initial sales. But when people leave bad reviews, sales can drop off dramatically and even stop. So I'm curious as to why it would have so many good reviews. I know some of them will be paid for, but all of them? Seems far-fetched and would probably cancel out the profit from those that did genuinely buy it. Once you're there with a low star rating the algorithm doesn't matter as much because buyers will ignore you.

I'd also say yes and no
here's where subjectivity comes in play. many people will genuinely like a book because they're not bothered by what you think is terrible, they just didn't notice it. many people will read a book (which already makes it more popular, without even a good review) because they trust a youtuber or blogger who mentioned/reviewed it. many people will actually like exactly the parts that you hated. I could name a few fantasy classics that are dearly loved and treasured, yet every 3rd review on goodreads will point out things in them that are signs of bad writing. yet the average rating will be over 4 stars *shrug*
and then, marketing and possibly low standards. there's pressure to like things, there's simple enjoyment of specific elements, there's also unawareness about specific elements, there's an excitement of sharing the experience with other people. many factors, not all of them have actually to do with the book itself. oh and then there are gorgeous covers
