So true, I also think its harder to make something as a commission for someone else, the standards are obv way higher! c':

I'm good at delivering a finished product that looks good, to my family and friends etc it looks great and finished, but only I'd know about the many little unpolished bits that I've expertly hidden haha

If I'd have to deliver the same thing for a paying customer I'd drown in self-made stress that it all has to be perfect and it would surely take away part of the joy I get from building/creating. I'm a bit messy with my work and like to try out different techniques and ideas, often I change my mind or get a new idea of approach halfway through xD

Sticking to a timeline would be disastrous for me too

That's one of the reasons why I make stuff then sell it, rather than doing commissions most of the time XD

Although I did have one time when a designer wanted to commission some jewellery to go along with her clothing for a show. We agreed a price, set everything up, and even finalised the designs, so I started to make the first one. Then she decided not to do the show :mcmeh: she paid me for the work I had already done, but I was really annoyed because I actually wanted to make that collection. I ended up finishing the one I started and it's one of my favourite things I've ever made. So I'd like to do commissions in that context I guess. It was fun while it lasted XD

Aww sounds like a really pretty thing, a jewellery collection. Pity you had to cancel cause that'd been good advertisement too c':

One of the things I would be interested in developing and maybe selling is patterns. Cosplayers that are good in constructing their pieces or have a nice interpretation of a certain design can make a lot of good sales from pouring their constructing into an easy to follow pattern.

Yeah, I was looking forward to it haha. At least I got something good out of it, and I can still go back and make the other designs one day. They're not high on my list right now because that one took a lot of hours of sewing :mcmeh:

Definitely, I buy patterns myself. Although for "normal" clothing, but hey, if I cosplayed I would want something more specific to try.

People usually underestimate how much work goes into crafting of any kind. I spent days on my Rakan cape and my parents would walk by the table now and then and just balk like 'how are you still working on this thing?? When will you consider it finished??'

When its finished and no sooner mother! Leave me to my self-torture in peace c':

I've bought patterns and books even from cosplayers whose methods I really admire and know I can learn a lot from.

I'm usually puzzled by how many people look for patterns or tutorials for some (imo) really simple things though. I can understand a specific or unusual shaped outfit but..So many people don't seem to know how to sew basic tops and pants for example? Maybe I should throw my go-to sewing patterns onto Etsy or such haha

I only just started (machine) sewing, so I would have to think about it to make that kind of thing too. I mean, I could probably work it out, even just thinking about it now. I've made such items for dolls and suchlike as practice without a pattern. But it's nice to have a guide to get you started!

Yeah, a lot of people are surprised by my prices. Then I'm like, well, I'm actually paying myself less than minimum wage based on how long it took to make it >.>

I have a machine, but actually I've found I really prefer hand sewing! Like my entire cape was sewn by hand. It obviously takes far longer but hand sewing is almost therapeutic for me c:

I eye-ball my patterns. Just get all my measurements necessary and streamline the pieces on pattern paper. So far it's always come out perfectly, with only rarely a minor mislength of fabric that I can easily tuck in and sew shut on the inside of the clothing so nothing is visible on the outside :P

Personally I find you can always use an existing piece or pattern as a guide for what you're making. My Rakan pants were super easy haha I took a pair of my lolitabloomers as a guide; the Rakan pants are longer and no frills, that's it! c':

Customers always just think of the material costs :/
Then they're like 'but that fabric costs -, how can you charge 3x more!' D:<

Well how about because I'm the one doing the work to turn this fabric into an outfit for you??

If they don't like your prices they can do it themselves, and fail cause they don't have the skill c':

I do so much hand sewing with my embroidery that my machine embroidery turns out to be a fun break X'D I need to rest my poor hands from time to time. All they do is type and sew haha.

I'm quite imprecise and messy also so it's a good idea for me to follow guides >.> I'm a "woohooo let's cut this whole thing out without even checking iiiit" kind of person XD I get carried away. Same with cooking, when I don't follow a recipe I usually end up making far too much food because I'm just like "put it all in the paaaan" haha~

My fingertips hate me (and the needle) for my preference of hand sewing, without a fingerthimble c':

and my back aches when I'm bent over my projects for too long. My tip is to have more than one thing to work on! I always have an easier/different kind of little project on the table to work on when my fingers start cramping or such haha

I only have that problem with rice and pasta. I never really follow a recipe and measure things 'by hand' but I tend to throw in my rice/pasta and then go 'hmm that seems a bit too small a portion....better throw in a liiiil more' and then I end up with cooking rice/pasta for 3 people instead of just me.

I love rice and pasta though so I do usually count for two :'D

it always seems so small though cause it hasn't puffed up yet and then it starts to cook and soak up the water and its suddenly like wow xD

I don't even get thimbles, like I don't know how anyone can sew with them. 95% of sewing for me is feeling the thread and the fabric, knowing how hard to pull, feeling it slip nicely into place so I don't have to turn the piece over constantly. I tried using a thimble and it was like sewing blind.

I have a sore back anyway so I tend to only work for maybe an hour at a time maximum, before I'll change position and do something that doesn't involve my hands and arms/shoulders. When I sew all day at fairs, I end up with a lot of stiffness and aching across my whole back, so I try to avoid that at home.

Maybe I just always sew at the same level because I don't find any difference between projects :'D I usually have at least three running at a time, but I don't like switching from one to the other in the same session as much. I like to focus in and really put in some work to get it done faster.

YES haha once I misread some ingredients in a recipe and put in the weight of dry rice when it was meant to be the weight cooked (like how do you even calculate that when it's dry GTFO). We had... a lot of rice that day >.>
Mostly I do it with veggies though. "I'll put in three of those, and I'll chop up one of those, and these will go off soon, and we might as well have those..." and suddnely it doesn't fit in the wok anymore XD
