Surely you can freeze them... and bake them later.
I do that with other baked goods.

I never make donuts though.

Frozen cookie dough or brownie batter is delicious, so frozen doughnut dough might be a nice treat. Actual frozen doughnuts though has the same appeal as eating frozen waffles instead of toasting them first.

You eat frozen dough?

I may eat unbaked dough - all those scrapes that are left in the bowl, oh, those are mine to eat! >:D
But I've never eaten it frozen, for some reason. I guess it's already in a nice ball or even shaped, so I no longer have he "oh it's just the scrapes" excuse xD

Huh.

Frozen doughnut dough I understand, but would it even count as doughnuts at that point? I guess you could roll it out and cut them to shape and add the filling and top layer and finish all the shaping and then freeze them during the last rising period.....
not sure how the filling would interact with first the freezing and then the frying though...

Hm.

Frozen dough tends to be pretty good. Cookie dough is best, but pie dough isn't too bad in a pinch. All dough and batter is good unless it's par-baked and then put in the freezer. Then there is an issue...

I mean, there are plenty of ice cream flavors out there that incorporate actual batter and dough, so it's not to far out there to go for frozen doughnut dough. Plus there's such a thing as deep fried ice cream, though I haven't seen it in the stores in recent years.

I think when my sister worked at Dunkin Donuts she had said that the persons who made the doughnuts often put them in the freezer from the night or extremely early morning before, than who ever had morning duty had to thaw and fry them. I think that's how the story went. I don't really like the taste of Dunkin Donuts so there may be some truth to it.

There's also Baked Alaska for the ice cream department
Not 100% the same, but on a similar vein

I think freezing dough is quite frequent is most food stores that offer any kind of bread too.

Because bread dough takes a while to rise, in the old times bakers used to make it at night - so they could have fresh bread out of the oven early in the morning.
Traditional bakers still do.
Some bakeries now may put the dough in the fridge for some hours to retard the rising, but not freeze it.

But supermarkets and such, those make tons of bread which they ship shaped and frozen.
So the first workers in he morning all they have to do it is thaw and put in the oven - no bakery knowledge required.
It hardly tastes as bread, if you ask me, but I'm inclined to believe it's got a lot to do with the (cheap) ingredients too.
