I feel like I'm one of those unlucky people without a job.
I think this is where the basic income comes in. Some countries have it and it works for them but I'm not sure how it'd go here in Australia.
I felt guilty when I bought things when I was on centerlink (welfare, in my case unemployed).

They will still need people to watch the machines. In factories here, I know there are robots and machines which will do a certain amount of the work and then a human has to check it. It's actually cheaper to have someone stand beside a machine, for example, and just push things every now and then to stop them jamming, than it is to buy a better machine. So I don't think these low-income labour jobs will be eliminated completely. Even with Amazon, I feel like they might partially manage it in one flagship shop which is state of the art and everyone visits it for the quirks and doesn't mind the mistakes, but realistically they need at least a few people working on a shop floor to fill in the places where the machines go wrong. When something is mechanical, there is always a chance it will not work correctly, so there will always be someone needed to watch it.
Maybe there will be a positive side of this and more people will get educations. Even if you aren't particularly smart, you can learn a certain thing which is possible to do just if you learn by heart how it works. So maybe more people will get these qualifications. Of course, first it's important that governments ensure people can afford to keep learning, which is the opposite of what they keep doing over here

@Firn: That's why I said unfortunately that kind of job isn't for everyone
And jacob is right, machines can still fail, so there's some hope.

It's costing more and more to go to uni or tafe here...
It's off-putting when the government I guess doesn't seem to care about the poor or the middle class.
They lowered the hecs debt threshold here :( so means if you earn like $45k per year i think it is, I'm not sure entirely on that bit, then you get debt to pay off from uni. But before it was $45k it was like..$55-60k.
Here in Australia our wages are decent, though our costs of living aren't, and so it can be still kind of easy to hit that $45k mark before tax is taken out of your pay. I know this because Peter has hit that mark already a few months ago (keep in mind our tax year is not from jan to dec, it's I think like half way in the year, to another point) and so he'll have to pay back a bit rather than get a tax return of $ it's a tax return of debt. That said his job is a good paying one.
But like we have people in jobs that aren't paying a lot and they'll get this now... which sucks :(

Yes, machines still need someone to look after them - now. But artificial intelligence is the future and at some point even the people looking after the machines will be replaced by other machines. That's the "real" problem, AIs, which now sounds like a super futuristic spaced-out thing, but isn't so far fetched anymore. I am not talking about machines that just lift heavy things for you, which is something we already have now, but about machines that will over time also replace more and more of the work only humans can do now.
Going to university should really be free everywhere, or at least affordable. It is so important! Education is the key to basically everything! It's a visious circle in some countries: Children from poor families cannot go there and stay poor and so do their children.
I am glad university is not crazy expensive in germany. It was just an administration fee and then they introduced actuall fees - OF COURSE right when I went to university - but got rid of them again so now it's only administration fees again. And that's already hard enough in my opinion, because going to university while working to pay for your living costs alone is already difficult as it is.

Like Terminator
I think some people are too afraid to think of things that could/will happen
At least I guess machines would free up the creative jobs :3 leaving those for the creative people such as artists, cosplayers, etc.
Though I wonder would machines replace every job?
