The GD is
It's more or less a series of cycles, sometimes even overlapping
Current cycle is because of one overly political person who got banned and is continually being banned because he makes mules and whines
That one is currently being much longer than the typical cycle, and some people are waiting for it to be over
A couple of days ago there was a second one, a religious one. Religious user (on the nasty end of religion) made a mule, so everyone blocked and/or mocked
Once in a while bandwagons occur, but they haven't recently

Other forums on rec are a lot slower, and from what I see, more chill
