I've never tried stinky tofu, that sounds interesting!

Huh. We have tests for failing vision and hearing, and research aids to help, but no research that I know of into ways to help failing taste or smell. And yet it makes a difference to quality of life. Wonder if there's an opportunity there for an enterprising company...

Smell and taste failing does fuck up with people's daily lives
A friend of mom's had a stroke over a year ago, about everything tastes like shit. Sometimes she'll find something that doesn't, but after a day or two it flips to bad
Last time we visited she mentioned that she was getting dentures, and she was hoping that after getting them, for more options on what she can eat, she can find stuff that tastes good very easily

Also, doesn't smell affect taste?

smell does affect taste.

Also textures can affect taste... so if you're like me and find certain textures of food weird, it won't taste as great.

I have only had regular tofu. Is stinky tofu prepared differently?

Drink some full cream milk then. A glass won't kill ya.

I feel like hearing and vision are more important to survival. Like eating isn't as fun if the food doesn't taste good but you can easily survive it.
But I do see where you're going with it. It would be sometime nice to research in the future.

Smell does affect taste. I actually think that's one of the reasons I'm a picky eater. I have an extremely sensitive sense of smell, there are a lot of foods I cannot eat. Makes me gag. Gross.
Maybe she could try those miracle berry pills? They make things things that taste bitter taste good. People will usually just take them for fun but it sounds that it could help.

I'm also sensitive to food texture. If I don't like the texture I'm not going to eat it. Even if it tastes great. Though I have found that most foods I don't like the texture of I'm not super into the taste either.

Oh no, don't get us started on oatmeal again. :qg:

Never heard of those pills
And I wouldn't be surprised to find that they don't work
If I remember right, a lot of stuff tastes metallic to her

Question to you people who are sensitive to food textures: are there foods where you like the texture and the taste is just 'meh', and you mostly eat it for the texture?

I've not heard of the miracle pills either. I have heard of a compound that can make sour things taste sweet, though. I wonder if it's related.

I can't think of any foods where I love the texture but do not love the taste ... hmmm. That's a tough one. :mcheh:

But I can think of things where I like the taste but not the texture - pineapple, for example. And oranges. :mctongue:

about chickoos/sapodillas: they're very sweet when they're ripe! in a refreshing way, not a cloying/overwhelming way. and if they're soft, then they're ripe :mccute:

@Akili i feel like that about a lot of crunchy snacks. like if i'm eating lentil soup with rice, i have papad even if it's a bland kind, or chegodis (rice rings) or chekkalu; i might not be able to taste them over the lentil but i like the crunch it brings.

oh and the reverse. rice is kind of bland but i have it with curd and it makes all the difference. i hate the texture of curd when eaten plain.

That's harder, to my mind. That's an ongoing, you have to live with it forever thing, instead of one single moment that's the exception instead of the rule.
