Basically. . .
If you fertilize the plant on the first day and also water it (only once in total) on the first day, you'll get the same item as when you fertilize it on the first day and only water it (once in total) on the second or third day.
But if you water it only on the first day and fertilize it on the second day, you'll get a different item than from above.
So the day you water the plants doesn't affect the item, only the frequency of which you water it does. On the other hand, the day(s) you fertilize does affect the item you get.
If that makes sense.
