Well, I'm a LOT pickier about nonfiction so it's probably safer to recommend fiction.
For fiction, genre isn't as important as editing and PoV.

If it's first person point of view, chances are REALLY HIGH that I won't like it. The exceptions are if the entire thing is written as journal entries or letters, where the format is CLEARLY someone relating a story/experience to a specific audience. If it slips up and starts doing "entries" or "letters" that are really scenes, which if you stopped and looked at it you would say "no one would write that!" then forget it. But if it maintains its perspective properly, then I might consider it.

Conversely! If it's third person, limited (close or distant) or omniscient; chances are good I'll enjoy it.

If the editing has a lot of slip-ups, I'm probably not going to finish the book.

If the word-crafting is good, though, I'll probably end up rereading it several times.

This sometimes makes getting recommendations difficult, because not everyone pays attention to that. >.<

      Spoiler
If you really want to do NF, though...

For non-fiction, either give me a specific translation or only give me titles in the original language; if the editing isn't the best don't even bother telling me about it, I don't care how wonderful/interesting/informative it is otherwise. If the author is giving lots of general statements make sure there's a VERY well annotated appendix or chapter endnotes... textbooks are fine if the editing was up to par, subject matter is actually irrelevant because I'll find nearly anything interesting. Autobiographies are always of more interest to me than biographies, but I'll take a biography if it's VERY well researched and without much spec-fic-style storymoding. That's all well and good IN a spec-fic work but I can't stand it in something that's supposedly non-fiction. >.< For history works, I'm better off with something written contemporaneously to the era than a "look back at X time" unless the focus is specific and narrow -like the "Engineering in the Ancient World" book was great, but "Life in the Middle Ages" I found to be rather a poor show. "Self-help" stuff is usually not of interest to me, I find them to be mostly filler. It seems like nearly every self-help book I've seen could be boiled down to maybe ONE PAGE of advice. Frustrates me. On the other hand, "how-to" books that are well done? Those I enjoy. Books on beekeeping, glassblowing, microwave repair, grafting, knots, the proper way to deal with asbestos installations, all of these have been enjoyed by me. So genre really isn't the important bit.

Ah, unfortunately I read a lot of first person stories.
It's closest to my style of writing, so it clicks well with me.
At least, my favorite first person stories do.

I'm reading one now called Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai.
It's first person, but it's written as short, poetic journal entries, I guess.
It's told from the POV of a child, so it has that reasonably childish tone to it, but it's really good so far.
It's about a girl whose family are refugees from Vietnam.

Otherwise .. I probably don't have much to offer that you might be interested in, haha.
      (I don't really read non-fiction, so)

          Awh, I'm sorry!
I'm sure you've read whatever else I could suggest.

I did just think of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
I just have a serious love for Dorian Gray.
Not sure if you'd like it, though.

              Oscar Wilde is wonderful!

(It was kind of funny, when I was first starting to collect permanent additions to my book collection, I was at a used book store and couldn't remember O.Henry's name. I blanked, told the owner, "famous for short stories, starts with an "O", wrote about a century ago give or take a couple decades" and they directed me to Oscar Wilde. :qc: A very serendipitous mistake!)

Oscar Wilde is one of my favorites, though I still have much to read of his.
That's actually really interesting! How fortunate, haha.

Oh, yay, you have some treats ahead of you then! It's always nice when there are a few "known" goodies in a TBR pile, lol. Sometimes when my TBR pile is all unknowns it can get discouraging or overwhelming. >.<

Are you going to try and read some more of his stuff for your goal of 20 this year, or are you saving them up for another time?

Well, I prefer reading actual books as opposed to audiobooks or e-books,
so I'll be reading whatever I physically get my hands on.
Unfortunately, I don't own any other Wilde novels right now. :(

There are a few older novels I want to read this year, though.
I started Man In The Iron Mask on my phone, which is a mistake because I never go to the books first on my phone, I go to games first (Like I said, not good with e-books). But I want to get through that.
                  And I started Les Miserables, and I'm determined to finish it! It's so long though. ;u ;
The other books I have lying around are mostly young adult books, so I can probably push through them pretty easily if it's written well enough.

                  What're your favorite books? o:

Hm, well, I'm in love with Laurie R King's technically-not-fan-fiction-but-totally-Sherlock-fan-fiction mystery series.
And Lois McMaster Bujold's "Vorkosigan Saga" (which is sci-fi but incorporates a huge range of subgenres; a couple of them are thriller-mysteries in a sci-fi setting, one or two are romantic farces, a couple are almost like war-memoirs, and there's a few which read more like coming-of-age tales, but they're all the same series and setting and they're all very well done)
I love the lyrical language of Patricia McKillip's works (or most of them anyhow). Changeling Sea and Od Magic, and the Bell at Sealey Head, and the Tower at Stony Wood, and Ombria in Shadow and Alphabet of Thorns and the Book of Atrix Wolfe and Winter Rose and The Forgotten Beasts of Eld and The Bards of Bone Plain and Song for the Basilisk...
Then I'm fond of the vivid and diverse worlds of Robin McKinley, and the precise prose and interesting details in Ngaio Marsh's mysteries, and I do enjoy the banter and humor of Dorothy Sayer's mysteries as well.
Lincoln Child & Douglas Preston's "Pendergast" series is one I also follow avidly, even though it makes me wince sometimes.
I'm fond of Jennifer Crusie's romances, and her mystery-romances, and even if they're short stories I loved Zenna Henderson's "Others" set (I guess they'd be sci-fi?). For sheer adventure, I keep re-reading Dumas (Three Musketeers is classic for a reason, lol) and enjoy some of Louis L'Amour's stuff too, although I guess technically most of his works would be Westerns not Adventure? I get the genres a little confused sometimes.

I can keep naming authors and books for hours, and I need to sleep sometime tonight, so maybe I should pause there for a bit. >.<
