Tbh, if I can't read LotR as an adult, I imagine child me wouldn't be able to sit through it. Do you enjoy the world building? As much as it is nice, I like to see plot progression more.
Honestly I kind of think that it's more suited to kids. Well, I guess kids can't get all of the adult allusions like the relationships between characters, but the pacing is better for kids. When you haven't ever heard of elves or dwarves or hobbits yet it's so magical to have that long exposition telling you all about these people and how they live, but when you feel like you know all the facts already, it's more "hey get on with it". It's also a "fault" of entertainment these days. Classic books do tend to have a slower pace, while modern films and books have to be snappier to grab attention. So now we come to expect that.

I don't mind slow pace so long as the prose is still good. I read Dostoyevsky a lot for example. The Brothers Karamazov is a murder mystery and the murder doesn't even happen until after 400 pages of philosophy and talk about everyday Russian life 8D I love it though, it makes me think more and I get more out of it than I do with modern books of the same genre. I feel like I've come to a realisation about life when I read his works.

I hate it when writers don't explain things. I always hope it will be said sooner or later about this or that, but it never is, and I'm just like "okay, cool, the story's okay, but.... how does this and that work? why not this or that?" etc., etc. :qhehe:

I probably wouldn't stand other literature than fantasy though, I'm too much of a kid and light-reader XD

I'm literally the opposite. My favourite writer is Haruki Murakami and he always leaves almost everything unexplained. We follow a character who starts with a dilemma, and the book continues until that dilemma is solved. No matter about the rest, once the dilemma is done, the book closes XD I love being able to try to figure out stuff myself and think about it deeply.

One of my favourite examples of something left unexplained is in Michael Haneke's film, Cache. There's a scene in the end credits that looks like endless chaos of people, but if you are watching closely in the middle, you can see two of the actors meeting up. You never get to know how the events of the film were set in motion as everyone who is there denies their involvement. Anyone who doesn't see the characters in the end credits usually believes what the main character believed and blames one person. Anyone who spots them in the end credits usually blames those two people instead. It's really clever and he's even said himself he doesn't want the film to have "an" single answer, but that the answer depends on the viewer.

Okay I'll stop nerding now (lol probs never)

I am in between you guys xD It depends on the story whether I am satisfied with an open end/fewer explanations or whether I want a full resolve.

Edit: Does anybody of you happen to have 15x Goblin Ear and 2x Light Orb ? I started to do quests again and aimed too high xD
