Julez I admit I never managed to get into any of the caffeinated beverages. I love the accouterments of them (teacups and cute coffee grinders and mysterious press-things and teapots and strainers and so on), but the actual drinks are just not my thing.
Maybe it's because I have a texture association with flavors? So for me, bitter anything is almost always best when it's chewy. Thin liquids are almost always best when they're sour, and the more viscous the more sweet I will take it.... until you get super thick when I associate it with savory / umami. The more I'm typing this out the weirder I realize it is...

I've only heard of people who associate names with certain colours, but never of texture being connected to flavour that is intersting!

Julez, are they into actual mate or just the mate based soft drink club mate? Because I've seen a lot of people being into that, but it's completely different.

Maybe you'd enjoy the sweet and milky coffee based drinks more then? Or something like a frappucino? (With ice blended into it, so that it is really viscous - although that might already fall into your savory category then)

Yeah, mate itself is what Akili described - a special tea that you drink through a metal straw which has a sieve at the bottom to keep the leaves away. It's a traditional south american drink. The club mate and similar are I think made with the same plant, but are a completely different thing apart from that.

(but if it needed confirming -yes, that's what I was talking about, the actual tea-leaves in a cup with the sieve-straw. It has always been VERY sweet whenever it was offered to me, but the bitter undertaste is still there)

Well, bitter is kind of relative. If it's more bitter than usual, it might be brewed wrong, but a lot of teas naturally have some bitter notes to them.
