Aw, that sounds like a very good boy dog.
It's funny how people are with walking dogs. We used to have a neighbor family that were all into long distance running, and they came home at different times, and every time they'd go out their two dogs would beg to go with, and these dogs were in SUCH good shape because they'd go on so many runs every single day. It was impossible for any of us to take care of them properly when we'd try and babysit, because the dogs would expect to be taken out for super long walks multiple times a day....
I feel like with a dog that's not used to walking, you can distract them from "owners are gone! World is ending!" by taking them a short distance, so at least that's something.
(Dogs are so enthusiastic. If their owner is gone, the world must be ending. When they see people they love again, even after a short ending, then it's instant ecstasy. They're so whole-hearted

)
