Hmmmm, I last read those books back around in '89 or '90, so it's been a while. They're quite feral, at first, and are bred as fighters as well as food -kind of like early chickens and roosters, I guess?- but have a lot of cunning and better memories than roosters, for sure -as well as being bigger and a lot more dangerous.... although I think it gradually comes out they're a fair bit smarter than you think at first, it's just an alien sort of smart so it takes a while to see and recognize?
It's been a while, I don't really... I should go re-read them. I was, at the time, a lot less interested in the dragon portion of the books than in using them to try and understand the interplay between humans of widely disparate power levels (that society has feudal-level power imbalances, and at the time I was reading them my family was trying to explain our history to me and the whole concept of slavery was really hard to understand, so the distance of seeing something similar in a non-threatening fantasy book got my attention a lot more than the dragons did)

I would have to say turtles are my favorite pet due to the fact that if you take care of them properly they can out live their owners. The thought of dealing with something that can die in only a short few years depresses me and I don't like dealing with death of other things to begin with.

I also don't like the thought of pets in general from watching other people with pets as it seem expensive as hell and cumbersome when you want to travel or be out of the house for more than 6 hours... That and some people really should not be in charge of the life of other beings :mcsweat: ...

Akili: Ah... I see. Kinda surprised to hear that they're bred for food though haha Never heard of a dragon bred for food.

Yeah, understanding slavery at a young age can be a bit cray lol

Zuralli: Then you'd have to find an appropriate owner for the turtle :'o I would fear and not trust anyone to handle my precious baby haha

Zuralli, you'd probably like my bees, then. They'd be just fine if I up and left for good. :mclaugh: And as a collective/hive they also have the potential to outlast a whole family line of people.... although they'll probably end up migrating themselves and up and leaving, what with climate change and all.

Nankuii: Humans do have a long history of looking at animals and going, "I wonder what that would taste like?" so I guess it kind of makes sense if you posit a world where they aren't rare/endangered. And, yeah, that wasn't a concept that came right away, it's the sort of thing you grapple with your whole life. :qsweat:

In reality I like cats. They're pretty self sufficient. But they're cuddly too. It's a nice combo.

I don't know what kind of fantasy animal I would like.
A dragon does sound really cool. Or like a psuedo dragon from DnD? Which is basically a dragon the size of a large cat.

Though dragons are amazing, part of me feels like they would be too expensive as a pet, especially if you live in the city or places where there is not a lot of game so that they can hunt, and almost too self sufficient too where they are just using your house for the hoard, they may not even care that it was you place to begin with... Books make it sound relatively easy to have one, depending on the book and adventure.

Guys, no contest. I'm getting a unicorn.
It would pay for itself in Instagram sponsorship deals alone. And the maintenance is probably exactly the same as having a horse.

Hm.

It occurs to me that I'd never have to worry about uninvited guests again if I had a basilisk as a door-guard...
