Maybe see if you can sell him on the idea of a "middle east" tour that ends with Eilat (southern tip of Israel, has interesting diving and is pretty easy border crossing into Jordan for Petra). You could do Petra as a camel trail on the way from one area to the next, so you get it on the way, as a "we're passing through the area anyhow".
(I tend to think that if I'm going to travel, I may as well make the travel part itself part of the interesting trip, and try to get in as many different methods of travel as possible).

Oh, we backpacked (yeah backpacked -__-) through Egypt because I wanted to, you know, see the Pyramids and he wanted to dive (again) in the Red Sea (it was wonderful, I'll give it to him) so I'm pretty sure I'll find a way to sell him to the idea of another trip to the region.
Then again there are so many places I/we want to go. I'm trying to sell him the idea of a trip to see the auroras but husband hates the cold so it's hard.
