I don't cry much, but nowadays crying is not as frowned upon as it used to be so people tend to be more open about it.
I notice it in my son too.
Yesterday he started crying because we want to rebuild the bathroom....

I cry a bit every time i yawn…8U in cantonese/chinese, the character for “cry” is actually in the characters for “yawn” lol.

I think the last time I all out cried at a story was when I watched the finale for Assassination Classroom /DDD;;; Comedies tend to make me cry easiest...

喊 haam3 - cry (cantonese)
路 lou6 - road; path; way; means;

Yeah i know, its weird. XD its not 哭 (Ku) in Mandarin, in Cantonese its 喊 (Haam). In Canto, we would rarely say something like “我哭”, its like….it just sounds so dang formal to me lol. Cantonese people would probably look at you weird if you said it like that lol.

That sounds super confusing.... at least with multiple languages using the same alphabet, it's relatively easy to tell because the letter combinations used are so different....
you'd need sentences instead of words to tell the difference with languages using the same pool of characters for different words...

I guess so? In Cantonese, we wouldn’t WRITE “打喊路” in literature, because its considered to be something similar to slang in Chinese? Like you can SAY it but not WRITE it in the same way. In Cantonese literature/writing format, we would write “哭” just like they would in Mandarin. I asked my mom about the “喊” being defined as “yell” in Mandarin and its true.

Its probably similar to how, in proper English literature, you wouldn’t write shorthand or slang words, unless you’re writing fiction. Like can you imagine, a proper English book with shorthand words like “FYI” or “TBH”? Its similar to that. The Cantonese way of SAYING “yawn” is similar to this kind of English slang.

There's a lot of non-official "words" that we write in English, isn't there?

Such as "hm" and "oooooh" and "ha ha ha" or "ja ja ja" or however someone chooses to spell it.

And uh/um/er.

And probably a whole slew of others I haven't consciously picked up on.


I wonder if there are any language courses which actually have a unit on such common "non-words"?
