It wasn't even pretty or anything, just a big decorated cardboard box.
I did consider buying it but honestly I don't want to drink that much beer.

If they distributed those where I work (or offered them), they'd get a lot of interest
Lots of alcoholics. No I'm not one of them, I don't drink. Try stuff? Yes. Drink regular? Definitely not

I think it would be a hit in the whole of Japan as well, the drinking culture is nuts. Younger people drink a lot less but everyone else? It's crazy.
Like it is not unsual to see people having a can of beer or whisky in the train before work in the morning.
I have also seen a mother alone with her two children having a huge can of beer in the train which strikes me as a bit dangerous.

I thought the French were pretty open with alcohol but the Japanese might be worse.

I think the French are just snobbier about it

There's a bad alcoholism problem in the States too. They just call it "drinking culture" to make it seem not like one. Which yikes

Especially since the trains are packed in the morning.

You have a point. We also do make a point of not drinking first thing in the morning. But I find it interesting to compare to the Japanese way of doing it.
I feel like they drink a lot more but there is zero tolerance with drinking and driving, same with the drinking of minors, there is ZERO tolerance in Japan while in France people make their kids drink without any problem.

Ugh I wouldn’t want to smell someone who was drunk either.

In the morning, with the train already full of people sweating, it's disgusting.

My boyfriend loves beer, I do not and prefer whiskey, but, I really enjoy volunteering at the annual Brewfest. I can't remember the last time we had a drink though... Probably for sure in the next few days, we're off to the courthouse to get hitched and then off for a quick overnight honeymoon at a German-themed town. (We'll be throwing a proper wedding next spring when we can both afford it and we've already got the cruise paid for on the real honeymoon, this is just so I don't have to buy two driver licenses because my current license will expire before the wedding.)

My aversion to public drinking in tight quarters like a bus or subway is smell and stickiness. Just water, please. Less risky in an accident, more hydrating for your body, and no weird forever stains like with sports or soft drinks.
