I have all of my old Knuffel on a show off you Knuffel post. Should I save the codes elsewhere as well?

I would say have them in a few places. I have mine on another pet site Forum and I just put them on my website. I know others have used there Gaia Journals as a Knuffel holding place or a Text file on there computer. You can probably post them on Live Journal too.

How did buying Knuffel's on Gaia work? o.o

I believe you just bought them with gold.
Much the same way here, but Firn had to pm the codes. [If I am correct]
