Recently I went shopping on my own and picked up a book from the bestsellers stand randomly because I felt like rewarding myself haha. It says nothing on the cover at all, but when I started to read it, it turned out it was book two in a series. I carried on anyway and hated it so then I was pretty pleased I hadn't bothered with the first one either haha. Definitely not going anywhere that author again.

I don't know what it is with some writers, but they seem to write conversations and interactions in ways that we as humans just don't act. Like really awkward and fake, you know? It really turns me off books, but it seems like so many modern authors do that.

I read some of the most artificial dialogues in the classics too! I guess writing realistically is... hard? I mean if it was easy, all books would be written realistically, right? :mclaugh:

oh what series was that?

Oh, man I hate when I start a book and realize it's book 2. If it's book 2, say that on the cover! Like, why would you try to hide that from people!? Drives me nuts!

I hate fake conversations too. I mean, I guess it might be challenging to write a natural sounding conversation when you're writing both sides, and you know what you want to say, and you know where you want it to lead. But still! At least make the people sound like humans! (Unless they're not humans of course!)

don't think I've ever started a book and realized it wasn't the first one in the series. probably because I want at least the synopsis, sometimes even "research" for reviews. don't they usually write this information on the inside of the book? together with what other books are in the series?

I don't remember the author or the series haha :mcdead: I think I blanked it out because it was so uninspiring. But yeah, it didn't say anywhere on the cover or on the inside. What happened was, I was even a little suspicious because the blurb sounded like the character should be known to the reader. So I examined everywhere, checked the inside cover, everything. Not a word. It was only when I looked on Wikipedia that I could verify it was the second book. At the back there were some reviews for the first title but it wasn't marked clearly enough to stand out.

I did, but it was a hard slog. I think I mostly managed to finish it because I was looking forward to reading the next book on my list haha.

I've started looking books up on GoodReads before reading them. I avoid the summary and reviews. I just look and see if it's part of a series then get out lol.

I bought a bunch of Star Trek books. And part of the reason that I haven't started reading them is that I'm dreading having to look them all up and see which are part of series and which can stand alone!
