It doesn't really matter it depends how fast you want your knuffel to reach level 100
if you don't mind it taking longer to reach it's final level you can just do what you're doing

Is it too late to start training my Summer Knuffel as a fire Knuffel, then? I mean, it's level 6 and I've been giving it water so far. Will I lose out on something if I try to change that now?

It'll dig more successfully more often early on if you just leave it in its native element >.>
I don't really see the point of leveling it in a different one honestly

Umm, probably shouldn't stray course now - you'll can't get 100 points in another element, because they all start with 1 and there's 100 levels, right? (I put them all over the place with my first one and had to go back to his original element for that reason...)
But both together would be okay for someone starting, right? I mean, what Caden said - at first, the in-element knuffel will have more rewards, 'cause at level 5 it has a 15% chance, while something out of element would have only 5%; eventually, the latter would be leveling faster than the in-element one and outstrip them, but until then...
Or simply: Knuffel get more exp if they find something outside of their natural element.
(So goes my memory of Konan's explanation...) ;;;;

If you're only at level 6, you should still be okay to switch elements if you want to.

You can still switch elements but the knuffel won't reach a 100% dig success like it would if you had started
Honestly that choice is up to you
Like Aji puts hers in daycare, I personally wouldn't
just because there's always the chance they'll find fps while digging
so you're missing out on potential dig days while it's in daycare
since wild knuffels can't dig I prefer to put them in daycare instead of regular knuffel
I mean there are also pros to leveling it within it's element as well
Because it takes longer to reach level 100 that's more dig days
that it can potentially find fps for you because at level 100 they stop finding fps digging
AND for every point above 100 goes towards finding rarer items
like clothes for your avatar and rarer materials
not to mention they are actually faster to dig with
