I've never watched a livestream. I don't know if I would like it.

It's like watching a yt video, but the chat is live and if the person has a mic, they can reply on the video

So if it's, say, hosted by a person you're friends with, it can be fun, especially if you get along with the others. If not, it's prolly not so enjoyable

Does the session show up afterwards as an archived video others can see, or is it live-only and once a moment is gone it is gone for good?

The video is archived. I think the chat is supposed to be, too, but glitches my occur and have that not happen

It sounds like a really interesting way of doing stuff! Like video conference calls, kind of??
I wonder if a lot of classes will end up doing livestream stuff and become long distance classes....

Good god kids who have one of those and have limited to no internet access would be royally fucked, especially if they're unable to get somewhere with internet access

Generally speaking all long-distance classes these days require a really good computer connection anyhow though, so they're already limited in that sense.
(I'm thinking post-secondary schooling, mostly, right now. Which tends to be limited to people with money anyhow, sigh)
