And giving them higher pay than current employees will drive off the current ones, especially if they don't get matched

It's because they really needed new employees and they realized the pay isn't really drawing in potential new hires. (at least in my experience)
Yup, exactly. You do this kind of things when you're desperate, which in turn drives other people to quit which is a bit stupid.
So basically always look at other offers for your own company but also for other companies for the same position so you more or less know where you stand salary wise.

Anyway, good news, boss said everyone's gonna get the new salary and that I (and several other people) will get a raise even higher. Good. I kinda wish they'd have said that before.
Though I kinda suspect I scared him a whole lot because me stumbling upon the offer for new hires on Indeed means I was looking for work so now he knows I am serious about leaving.

That's the only right thing to do tbh. I just find it really bad if they don't t because it shows they don't appreciate there employees.

And and their reputation as an employer would suffer as a result

We don't have enough employees to have a reputation.

But I did ask my boss while being ready to quit on the spot. I know they appreciate the work we do but that doesn't mean they understand a thing about it. Nor do they really get how bad the situation is.

It doesn't take much, and it's just much more noticeable when there's a lot

Well, at least they agreed to raise your salaries accordingly.
It would have been nice they had done it earlier, but this shows some decency at least.

I remember one of my brother's co-worker, who did an awesome job and had been working for the company for quite a bit, and asked for a raise. They said no.
He knew he was worth it and insisted a bit - so they fired him! :mcmeh:

They had to hire someone else, but they could not find anybody for the amount they paid him. Ended up paying more than the first worker had asked... and the new guy is not half as good in his job!

Well, I'm the last remaining employee who started when the hotel reopened so yeah, firing me would be quite inconvenient for them since I know everything. Which is, honestly, already too much for a minimum wage part timer.

Thing is, I'm not even doing it for the money, it's the symbol of it. And I was annoyed for the other part timers who do more than their share.
