mem, did you know the fruit under another name? I would expect them to be available in your area, no? When I first heard the name persimmon for it I had no idea they were just what I knew as kakis :D
Tora, I definitely recommend trying them if you get the chance :) They should not feel completely hard ideally, but somewhat soft to the touch. (Even though the peel itself is kinda stiff and hard but very thin, I recommend slicing them in quarters and then peeling them, you can pull the peel right off if they're soft enough or cut it away with a knife if they're still a bit harder)
