If you want that fire place kind of warmth without the smoke, I suggest a pellet stove. It still requires a good deal of cleaning but its less smoky and in my opinion a bit safer. I think you can also get them in different styles although to be honest I've only had a sad generic looking one in my first apartment.

That's also a big issue. We had our carbon monoxide detector in the same room as the fireplace so if the airflow wasn't right and carbon monoxide started getting into the house we would know.

Probably not unless you're okay with the constant maintenance. If you want one for the aesthetics, then an electric one should be fine.

Side rant: I just had another student who was bold enough to ask me if we could take our math quizzes together. 1. That's super duper cheating. 2. I refuse to let people profit of of my math skills if they have put in no work themselves. Like studying or trying problems themselves on their own time. 3. We are going to be professionals in healthcare, you need to know how to do your own math.

Me: sure, but we can't sit together, say anything, or look at each other's papers until after they're graded

I just told him a flat out no and that he needs to try working out the problems himself because at the end of the day we need to know this for our profession.
