What it comes down to really Mika, is that the snake is seen as cunning and capable of doing things no one thinks possible. Lucifer convinced Adam and Eve to turn away from God, so he is compared to the snake. He talked them into laying with him, breaking their marriage before God by being with another, an angel to boot. They learned of using sex for pleasure and that someone other than their partner before God could give it to them.
At least, that's the story according to the Hebrew/Aramaic texts. -Has had to sit through way, way too many sessions.-
Because of the re-translation of the bible from language to language and it's being tweaked to fit the leaders of the times it's become very skewed and people take the "snake" and "fruit" thing far too literally.
Web: Regardless. In the same way, I hate that Christians have turned the pentacle/pentagram into a symbol of evil. It's no more evil than a bible. What it's used for (intent) is the key. It can be used for good as well as evil, much like a bible can be used to save souls or it can be used as an excuse to go to war (and it has been).

They do, they live FOREVER. And are STUPID EASY to keep. It's redonkulous.
Also, I believe that symbol is called the Caduceus.

Isn't there an actual medical/hospital symbol based off it these days though? And I thought Moses had a staff and snake and whoever gazed upon it was instantly healed?
I wish I could do art like
this <--makes me so jealous, but I think they must've gone to art school. But, then, maybe I just lack talent so severely I can't imagine someone being that naturally good at it.

Oh no i agree completely that God loves them, because they're his creatures. I also stand on the fact that God cursed snakes, and he cursed humans but we don't go whacking at every other person, and running away from people every time we see someone new. do we?
@Aerymith: In all due respect, the Bible isn't up for interpretation. The devil came as a snake, and God cursed the snake for allowing the devil to use him. there is quite litterally a tree of life, with it's own fruit, and a tree of knowladge of good and evil, with it's own fruit.

Yes, that's called the Caduceus.
Not gonna lie, I'm not really comfortable with where this conversation is going... Can we maybe talk about something else? @_@
I think everyone here is mature, I just don't want everyone to get butthurt at each other.

The modern Bible is all interpretation. Those who could read it had to explain it in a different language to those who rewrote it, and it was the same way for the next group who wanted a copy in their language, and again and again until you get what you have now. Not saying that each shouldn't believe what they want on it, they do anyway. I personally don't believe in organized religion, but that's my thing.
That being said, I won't speak further on the subject.
So, I need a snack... Pears or ice cream?

Ah, yeah the Caduceus, I finally found it on Wiki. It says it was the staff carried by Hermes.
If the Bible isn't up for interpretation then I hope you're reading it in its original language (because many of the meanings are controversial in English and there are numerous Bible scholars who debate on it) and you're covering your head and stoning people who work on Sunday.
I do think we need to reclaim the day of rest.... >.<
+also if you go at is from a literary scholar POV, literalism wasn't a big thing until recently. During the Renaissance literalism wasn't around or popular. I'm trying to remember what we were doing in class with Shakespeare and what the literary theory of the time was called. Not just romanticism was it?

@Aeri: And wolves are often seen as wicked, blood-thirsty beasts. And owls are a symbol of wisdom and/or a symbol of death. In the end, I think it's all about how culture/society views an animal. Doesn't make them good or bad; they are just the way they are.
Never read that version of the Bible. XD
Religion has always been an excuse for war; it's been seen in a number of cultures.
@Kori: The Rod of Asclepius and the caduceus are very similar but different. Snakes and staff... it's funny how the Bible has it and how the ancient Greek religions had it too. Symbolism and religion are very interesting.
@Webkinz: Night!
@Nuke: That was the bronze snake I mentioned; it wasn't the same snake and staff Moses used in front of the pharaoh; this one was a bronze snake and pole.
@Kori: Aha, yeah, let's drop the subject of religion. Like I said, many people many beliefs, many aspects to study from.
What's everyone up to tonight?
