One time when I was small, I was playing at someone's house and a board fell off of their roof and smashed my big toe. It was so intense that I ran fever and I lost my toenail ;-;

Smashed... Oh wow. Yeah I can imagine that hurt enough to get a fever from, all of those nerve-endings going off at once... Yikes.
It is also why most broken bones don't hurt as they do not have nerves. It is the damage to the surrounding tissue that causes the pain sensation. :}

What I hear is that most workplaces seem to be getting worse over the years. Like there's some secret competition between managers who can be the worst out there...

thank you! yeah, it's tough out here. one place offered me an internship that can extend month to month but the pay is peanuts. what i need is a fixed internship period, like a month, after which i'm offered something permanent with better pay. i've been in the workforce for three years and i need a raise, dammit.

That's it. Things should be fixed. Internships should only last as long as it is needed to teach you the job, and raises should be a given after a certain time/work delivered.
You used to go to work to better yourself, now people are the profit that work betters itself with. :}
