well, as much as smartphone are the most popular, there are still non-smart phones that you can buy i think.
i would totally just buy one that they can only really call from, and then maybe text, but only a limited amount or it's coming from their allowance or whatnot. XD

i got it when i was 14... and it was only because my cousin was nagging my parents about how important it is for me to have one. XD

I got my first computer for my 17th birthday.
It was my mom's way of showing me she supported my writing. :}

i think my parents caved because i went to some magnet school, and they were afraid i'd be behind other students. ^^;

I always went to my aunt's place to type my reports, or do them at school.
Also I used a typewriter (yes those old fashion things with ink-lint :D) if the teacher was known to take off points for handwritten reports.
For the teachers that didn't care as long as you turned them in, I did them by hand. :}
