I've never bought anything on finance. The thought of having debts scares me. (Well, technically my student loan was a debt too, but that just wasn't to be avoided)

But we could need a few new things too, but luckily just minor things, like a new carpet for the living room, because there are parts of the floor breaking off - well, technically we would need a new floor, but since we have neither the money to pay for it nor the motivation to do the work, a carpet seems like a smarter solution :mcheh: :mcsmirk:

I know the problem with the room. I will soon run out of space for my books too, but there just isn't any more room for any more shelves.

I only do it for things I could afford to buy outright. So, the furniture we bought last time, I had enough money in my savings to cover it.
We just put it on finance to improve our credit rating. With me being self-employed we need all the help we can get, I wasn't even able to go on the mortgage last time because of that so we had to do a whole complicated system of contracts and whatnot to tie us both in legally. Next time we move, I hope to have improved my score enough that they will put my name on.

I am sorry this is such a hassle for you. Being self-employed certainly isn't fun...

Not at all, I love it :) It was only a temporary problem and the only one I've ever had so far with working for myself. Everything else is a breeze.

I am glad you love it. I think it is the most horrible thing ever, but maybe that's just in Germany...

What things make it horrible? I think most things that peoploe say are horrible here aren't so bad. Like, I don't mind filing my taxes at all for example. Once I worked out how to do it the first time, which was awful, after that it's really easy.

Well, taxes is one thing, but that's really the least of the problems. Other things are much worse. Uncertain income and not knowing whether you'll be abale to pay your rent or food the next month is one thing. Health insurance for self-employed people is a huge problem in Germany. It's mandatory here and for whatever really not plausible reason, if you are self-employed, no matter how little you earn, they always assume that you earn at least 2400€ each month -I have no idea where that number comes from and why it is so high. And then they calculate your health insurance fees based on at least this amount, which is something like 460€ each month. - Even if you possibly might just earn 700 or 800€ a month, so there is nothing left for you to live from. It's not only completely unfair that self-employed people might end up having to pay so much more health insurance, they also get much less from it, like no payment when they are sick and can't work. There is also no unemployment benefit. If you are employed and lose your job, you get an unemployment benefit from the state. If you are self-employed and for whatever reason can't continue your work, well, tough luck!
Self-employment might be great if you have a big stable income, but for low-earning self employed people it's really a nerv-wrecking fight for survival. And the problems you had with your credits - it's similar here. Try renting an apartment and tell your potential landlord that you are self-employed and therefore don't have a guaranteed fixed income - Good luck with that. The apartment situation is horrible in Germany to begin with, no one will take you.

Well, I guess that's all the same here then. I just never really had much problems with it. I didn't go full self-employed until I was sure I had enough clients to keep me going and lots of savings.

I too have this bookshelf problem. And the corners of them that don't hold books or movies are full of tiny colourful horses with wings and other strange growths.

...I haven't bought furniture, but yesterday I went to the dollar store and got new slippers! Also a little snowman light that plugs into the USB.
