Chrizine, I don't think they will budge. They have been pretty, well, let's say "not-nice" in general. Some time ago we had water damage in our bathroom, where water came down from the apartment above. We reported it to them and then we waited and waited and nothing happens. Weeks later they came by, looked at it and told me that I should take care of it myself, as it was "my problem, not theirs". The heating in my working room has not been working for 3 years now - They don't care.

I wanted to move out a long time ago already, but knew starkad would not cooperate, because it is so difficult to find a new apartment with all our pets. So I am somehow kind of "glad" that we have to move out, just wish we didn't have this immense additional costs and therefore the pressure to find something new ASAP. If I found something immediately, I would not pay them the additional rent they asked for (as I know you don't have to "agree" and then they have to sue you for the money and I know they would not get through with it as it is not legal) till we moved out, but not knowing whether I might still be dooomed to live here for 1 or 2 more years till we find something, I don't want to have any more trouble than we already have.
(Edit. Why did I write "doomed" with 3 Os? I am doomed. Dooooooomed.)

Haha, look where I just applied for an appartment:

Not that I have any hopes of getting one, but it would be kind of, well, interesting and my mother lives nearby. Who doesn't want to live in a barrack ? :mcwink:

Ah, I see. That sounds like pretty shitty landlords in general... I'm holding my thumbs that you find something nicer asap and can get out of there!

I understand not wanting to risk it while you have no idea when you'll find something else... Although I think it is pretty hard to actually kick out people from an apartment that don't have anywhere to go. But I'm sure it would be very unpleasant dealing with them trying to kick you out regardless.

Freudian slip on the doomed ;) But I really hope it will turn out that you are not doomed but rather find something nice with a more cooperative landlord and affordable rent!

Well, if the apartments are ok, why not ;) I didn't even know random people could apply for living there? Or is that just kind of a "it used to be for army people but there is actually nobody stationed there anymore" case?

I feel like apartment hunting is really a game of luck. We looked for ages before finding this one as well, didn't even apply for many because this is a small town and there were just so few apartments that fit what we needed and could afford (we have no car, so it had to be close enough to the station to go there by bike everyday, that is pretty limiting in a rural area...). But I'm very happy with this one, we haven't had any big issues yet, but there's a Hausmeister living directly in the house as well and she is really nice, so we can generally just go to her and she is the one who organizes what gets done with the actual landlords.

Yes, there is nobody stationed there anymore. I don't think they would let outsiders live there if it was still an active barrack. Not with all the high fences and barbwire they have there. Don't seem to fond of outsiders. :mcwink:
But I think it would be fun to live there. It's not "pretty", but there is still lots of green around and I think it would be a "modest" neighborhood. Can't really stand snobbish neighbors who feel offended by everything. - Animals, children, dirty boots, fly screens on the windows, everything. :mcsleepy: With some people you feel like they would prefer to live in a steril surrounding.

I am glad you found a nice place! That's really important. Finding an apartment in a small town can have its advantage, as there aren't so many people searching. (On the other hand it can also mean there aren't many free apartments available.)
We had a Hausmeister living next door for a while, but he was rather the "nosy type" than the "I'll take care of things"-type.

It's dinner time, so I'll be off.

Lots of green around is more important than a pretty facade on the house anyway, imo.
Why would anyone be offended by fly screens?? People are crazy.

Yeah, there's less people searching, but also fewer apartments. So it still comes down to luck. Or something like that.

Guten Appetit! I think I'll also have dinner now. I've been waiting for my mouth to stop being numb from a dentist's appointment I had in the afternoon and I'm so hungry... But I think it should be alright now, it is still a little numb, but luckily we made soup, so it should be not so problematic I think.

Ack, yeah, what an awful landlord. Fingers crossed you get something soon, even if it's not in the cool barracks XD

I don't know where we want to live next. J's working an hour and a half away, but I'm going into London regularly which is an hour and a bit in the other direction. We're really pulled in two different ways. Thing is, he might not be working there by the time we would even move in to a new place, because he's expecting a promotion soon. But also, our little area is very expensive and this means not getting good enough room to start a family. Then there's me needing to be within 10 minutes walk of a train station, and also having a doctor in walking distance... I'm not sure the dream town we need exists at all.

I had to move away from the small town I was born in because of lack of places to rent. People were paying rent to sleep on someone's couch.

Cloud castle time! *gives Firn a skooly and a nice place to park it near Starkad's work!*

Hah. If I could really be a fairy godmother, so many people would have homes and jobs.
