So the OS isn't so much materially different as updated?

Yeah, just a somewhat improved version. But sometimes there are quite big changes in the UI anyway, especially if you skip a few versions because you kept an old phone that didn't get updates anymore for a long time. Then it can still look and feel quite different.
Now don't get me started on the customized experiences a lot of the smartphone brands put on top of the base OS, though... That would probably just get confusing.

in this case, the phone was on 6.0 or something in the 6 region and now is in 7.0 so it is a bit of a jump but not terribly different and it helped that Peter's phone has 7.0 so I kinda knew it already.

think of it in this case like going from windows 7 to windows 8 to windows 8.5 then later 10.. but you have all these little updates in between as well. For the smart phones it's like that but smaller I guess.

Wait I thought with the little phones that aren't hooked up to a line, they each have their own number so you get a new number when you get them?

im transferring providers.. number is in my name

... okay, old style numbers are associated with addresses, right? New ones are associated with the physical phone? But... your name, instead? So... wait. How does that work. I'm so confused!
