I started doing them because I saw them in Disgaia. They swish in when a character preforms a awesome attack or combo attack.

Though those are more close up then what I'm doing. They make good link banners. ^_^;

lol Regarding guide lines, if you draw without them, all the more power, but most of the professionals and very experienced artists themselves do still use guidelines. Some go as far as to draw in the skeleton forms to make sure they are not our of proportions (for the more realistic-art illustrators). Personally, I find guidelines very helpful, whether pre-design or post-design.
Annndd... I'm actually pretty sure they draw out the characters in full before cropping them out that way. xDD
Nothing against "cut-in"s though. I used to draw a LOT of them for my OCs and fanart. 4 or 5 panels on an A4 piece of paper. *snickers*

yeah we had a comic artist come to the collage and was crticing some of the student work. Someone had a spider man coming out of a dark shadow and it was just a silhouette of him. He told him that you still need to draw out where the full body is even if its all blacked out.
Speaking of witch, I need to do a Merman silhouette. I suck at them so much. X_x; I'm tempted to put on a contest to see who could do the best one.
Yeah I'm sure they draw them all out too. I could just make the lines in Flash and upload to oekaki. Jake's hand is f-ed up. X_x;

Always draw the full body, no chance for mistakes. :)
Merman silhouette?
I think the problem with the fingers are them being too pudgy non-finger like.
Adding one or two more lines to define the bend won't hurt, I think.
The nails are making the fingers look extra awkward. Finger position =/= nail position. A bit tricky. :/
EDIT: OH YEAH! That is why! KC, try shortening the last two fingers. Unless he's holding something shaped like a cone, the ring finger and pinky should not be the same length as the other two fingers.
