Kingdom of Knuffel

What a sad thing. It'd be one thing if they then took other characters who were originally white and made them of varying ethnicities, but when it only goes in one direction, it's... I don't have any words. I'm frustrated. Bah.

Well, it sometimes happens in other directions. I don't know about this movie, but I've seen some marvel fans complain about characters who got changed from white to black in other movies.

I never know if a movie has been white washed cause I usually don't know origins of movies.

It's nice to hear that, actually, Chrizine. Means they're paying attention more to talent than anything else, when it goes both ways. Only going one way is a problem, but both ways is great, or no change at all is fine too.

I think it's good if they make such a change because the actor is just a good choice for portraying the character, characterwise, even though they might look totally different. It's bad if they change it around if they want to specifically cast someone of another ethnicity, for whatever reason (be it because they have some weird ideas about white actors being more successful for a white audience or be it because they want to force diversity into a story where the source didn't have it), and it's not about who can best play the role out of all the available actors anymore. I think finding the best possible person to portray the core of the character should be the base for casting anyone, not some weird marketing or moral reasons external to that.

Speaking of that kind of thing, do you ever play that game where you mentally plan out a movie and pick 'ideal' actors and actresses for the different roles?



If KofK were to be a movie, who do you think would play Uriel the Alchemist, or the King or the Queen or Lord Wuffel or Grog or Skull?

I usually do that the other way round: I see a movie and think "wow, this actor would be perfect for playing character x from the book I read once!"

I don't know that many actors by name, so the opposite direction is difficult to do for me.

Oh, names. Names are hard. You can definitely do it by saying, "That one person who played X character from Y movie/show."

For instance!

Since Scull has no speech at all, it would be all about finding someone with good carriage, whose every move carries eloquence that needs no words to convey anything. So I'd want Marcel Marceau, whose name I had to go look up, but who can 'speak' with his hands -without sign language- better than anyone else I've ever come across.
That kind of thing.

I cannot wait until people stop acting that we need to hire people just because they are this ethnicity or gender etc. Like come on, if they are good for the job hire them, stuff making sure if it's diverse enough, or has equal for both genders. Just hire people, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, backgrounds, whatever!
