Well, you can't really escape Gaia when it comes to avatar sites.
But I agree that Kofk is a lot better, in all aspects.

(Of course, I'll be honest. I really thought the "Pokemon" thing was going to be that way, too. Catching adorable animals and then making them fight for entertainment? It really didn't seem like something that would last...)

Well, I think it's not as popular as it used to be. Nowadays there are more shows similar (and better for some) like Yokai watch etc... So I think that's taking Pokemon's thunder.
Many of the pokemon fans are people who aren't kids XD (like me)
