I was teaching him German first.

I don't know. German grammar (like the simple ones) might be easier, but the sounds are definitely harder. It might be easier to teach him to listen and speak in Japanese first. You know. And forgo the writing and reading for a bit.TESL?

@Alois: Lol that's funny.
I have weird dreams all the time but rarely about anime/game characters (even though Sephiroth is hot), this one time I dreamed I was a jelly bean being chased by ghosts around in an abandoned school and then in the end we escaped into this car with a kid and their mom and drove taunting the ghosts and it was suddenly daytime even though in most of the dream it was dark and creepy. (I know it makes absolutely no sense
)
