Aha, I understand how you feel --my phone kinda kills the quality of my art too. XD Generally I would use a scanner, but I don't think it's compatible with this laptop. O__o

I do much, much better when I have a guide to follow, like with that one. I have an analytical mind that works best when I know what I need to do. I found a picture I liked online, then started drawing it, adding the details I wanted and leaving out those I didn't.
I can't do things purely from imagination. If you asked me to create a creature for you that no one has ever seen before, I couldn't do it. I fail like that.

Well, I write from imagination. :)
I'm a person of text, of phrase, and I use it in drawing. If I have to draw from my mind I sketch several things I can see clearly - I create phrases to compose the text from. I usually have to think about the image for a long time and concider many details before I can at least start drawing.
But I'm currently using many references for drawing... because it's much more reliable than my imagination.

I can write well enough, I just can't really draw my own things. I have to work them out from something else. Like, trace a circle, then turn it into an egg instead of just drawing an egg.

I do a bit of both.
References are good, but always good to use the imagination.
