It doesn't cost much at all to take the driving test here. Maybe $20 all together. Then you have to renew your license ever so many years and I think that's about $10.

And yet, my first three attempts were free

Probably. I know they've (the state government) have changed the requirements for getting a driver's license and the procedure at least twice since I got mine. Granted that's been quite a few years, but still.

I've heard that it can be really expensive in some places. I think it's even cheaper in the neighboring state.

My 4th was pretty cool. I swam so much. Good times.

I didn't have to pay to take my driver's test. And I think my first id thing was free. I do have to pay to renew it but it's not expensive at all.
It's almost impossible to function here without a car.

Here a car is very much needed as well.
