Huh, my mother said salt, pepper, vinegar. I guess mustard is just mustard-seed-flavored vinegar, though.

We don't know. People are guessing. The hope is to find a diary of a person who write about small stuff like that and get it that way

Some restaurants (in France) did have mustard as well as salt and pepper on the table. So I'd say mustard. Though if we're talking about the UK I could see vinegar as well.
Though that's something that heavily differs depending on regions so I am not too sure we'd have a definite answer. Like Italy has cheese on the table. Some French restaurants have butter, some have olive oil.

You guys made me remember the story of the hairdresser who solved the mystery of how the Romans did their hair. Archeologists couldn't for the life of them figure out how those intricate designs seen on statues could be made, they couldn't find anything in tombs either.
Until one hairdresser who had no particular background in academics figured out their were sewn.

Or the story about how the oldest calendar ever found was most likely made by a woman.

They couldn't figure out where there were giant sewing needles in the hairdressing kits either
A bone tool they couldn't figure out: leather polishing. A modern leather worker saw one and went "yeah i have one. Bone's best and it gets better over time"

Yeah! I remember hearing about the bone thing too.

It's a very interesting field. I've kinda always regretted not going into it as I wanted to as a child.

From what i hear it's really a lot of boring paperwork with the occasional dig where you might find something, so maybe it wasn't a total loss to not go into it?
