I'm thinking Firn was holding the contest because she thought it'd be a while before the Gen 5 fire knuffel sold out like her Gen 2 brother (he didn't sell out for about...6 months I think, or was it longer?) However now the tables have turned.

It is impractical to assume the time of which a Knuffel would sell out, as that can never be determined surely. It is also unlikely for there not to be a Knuffel update if the current one sells out before the contest ends, it wouldn't make much sense to stagnant the generation continuity.
Also, if you really think about it, there were only some 30 or 40 Gen 5 Fire Knuffel left in the shop when the contest was announced, it doesn't make sense for the contest to start during the stage when there are that few left if that had been the intention.
Moreover, the contest lasts until January 31st next year and by the time Firn narrows down the list of Knuffel for us to vote and then having to redraw them in her style, that would have taken even more time until we actually get the Knuffel officially.
The contest was suggested and supported by the users, Firn approved of the idea and held the contest. From how I see it, the contest is to give the users a chance to try their hands at designing their own Knuffel, the fact that the current Fire Knuffel is selling out slow had nothing or little to do with it.

Tehran, Korochka's dark Knuffel, has fully evolved. Go on now, let's take a peak and give the li'l guy some love. He's eaten a whole heap of food and has got to have an awful tummy ache by now.
He can be found near the very top of page 190 in this thread.
