I thought it was just 'suru' (or shimasu) for video games..

I dunno. ^_^; "My Japanese Coach" says "play a game" is "ge-mu o yaru"; it doesn't say for video games though. ^_^;;

Oh, that's because I'm Chinese and speak Cantonese.
Cantonese uses Traditional Characters in writing, and kanji's the same thing. |D

I believe that is the base form, yes. Sometimes the game conjugates things without warning though. O.O
