You might be able to still get the files off the hard drive Nan, even if it doesn't turn on anymore.

Yes, I've heard of many business which recover old files from hard drives! If you want them badly enough you might be able to get them back!

Well, depending on the reason your laptop broke, the storage need not be corrupted. It should be possible to take out the hard drive and attach it to a different pc to copy the files from it (or maybe you can even just stick the old drive in a case and use it as an external hard drive directly).
If you have some local computer shop, they might be able to help you with that, since they should have the appropriate cables to attach the drive to a pc.

Chrizine: Sounds complicated enough. I'm not sure why my laptop stopped working either. I stopped using that one for a while, and when I tried turning it back on, it wouldn't. Oh well, that laptop had its troubles for some time.
