In most American (or non-anime) fandoms, if you call it "yaoi" and not "slash", they'll yell at you. >___o;

Mm. I usually hang out in forums where the posters aren't as into anime as they are here. Or blog sites, things like that.
It's pretty much the same thing, just with non-Japanese fandoms. With video games, I think people sometimes use both interchangably.
