That doesn't sound like somthing terrible happened to it, maybe it's just the battery that died because you didn't use it for a while. Your files are probably fine, so if you want to recover them, just take your laptop to some small computer shop, they should be able to help you. I'd try to really find a small shop, where they do things themselves, not some giant store where they probably send things away to some external workshop for repairs. If you can find a nice little store and are friendly, it shouldn't even be expensive.

I thought so too, but it hasn't been TERRIBLY long since I bought a new battery...

Well, it could also have some other problem, hard to say. I still think chances are pretty good that your files are still there if it just died silently.
No, I don't think it matters a terrible lot how long you wait, as long as you store the laptop safely (e.g. dropping it might damage the storage).
